How to read an AR model number

AR RF/Microwave Instrumentation, which many engineers still call Amplifier Research, builds the amplifiers found in military, aerospace and automotive RF immunity systems around the world. Its model numbers describe the product: power, series, then frequency. A 500W1000C is 500 W, W series, up to 1000 MHz, revision C. A 250S1G6C is 250 W, S series solid state, 1 GHz to 6 GHz. A 150A100D is 150 W, A series, up to 100 MHz. The U series covers 10 kHz to 1000 MHz in one unit, a T marks a travelling wave tube amplifier, and SP and TP are the pulsed versions.

Where AR is used

Military and automotive RF immunity testing

AR equipment is built first for the two sectors with the most demanding RF immunity requirements. Both need wide frequency coverage, amplifiers that stay linear into a badly matched antenna or injection probe, and pulse modulation for radar threats.

Military and aerospace

MIL-STD-461 RS103 radiated susceptibility from 2 MHz to 18 GHz, with an optional extension to 40 GHz, and CS114 bulk cable injection from 10 kHz to 200 MHz. RTCA/DO-160 Section 20 for airborne equipment.

  • A, W and S series amplifiers, T series TWT amplifiers above 18 GHz
  • ATR log-periodic antennas and ATH horns
  • DC series directional couplers and FL8000 field probes

Automotive components

ISO 11452-2 in an absorber-lined shielded enclosure from 80 MHz to 18 GHz, ISO 11452-4 bulk current injection from 1 MHz to 400 MHz, and the TEM cell and stripline methods of ISO 11452-3 and ISO 11452-5.

  • A series amplifiers for BCI, W and S series for the ALSE
  • U series for TEM cells and striplines
  • Multi-tone systems to shorten long test plans

Vehicles and radar pulse tests

ISO 11451-2 whole-vehicle immunity, and the radar pulse requirements of vehicle manufacturer specifications, which call for pulsed fields in the radar bands in addition to CW and AM.

  • SP series solid-state pulsed amplifiers, 0.8 GHz to 4 GHz
  • TP series pulsed TWT amplifiers to 18 GHz
  • FL8000 probes that measure pulsed as well as CW fields
Featured models

High power and high frequency: eight AR models

AR is chosen where the power is high and the band is wide. These are the models that show it: 10 kW below 1 GHz, kilowatts of solid-state power to 6 GHz, hundreds of watts to 18 GHz, and pulsed power for radar tests.

AR A and W series: RF amplifiers, 10 kHz to 1000 MHz

Class A solid-state amplifiers in bands from 10 kHz to 100, 225, 250 and 400 MHz for bulk current injection and CS114, and from 80 MHz to 1000 MHz for radiated immunity.

AR U series: universal amplifiers, 10 kHz to 1000 MHz

One amplifier across 10 kHz to 1000 MHz, for TEM cells, striplines and component work where a single unit over the conducted and the lower radiated bands is wanted.

AR SP series: solid-state pulsed amplifiers

Pulsed solid-state amplifiers from 0.8 GHz to 4 GHz for the radar pulse tests of vehicle manufacturer specifications and military programmes.

AR FL8000 field probes and field monitoring

Laser-powered electric field probe kits from 5 kHz to 60 GHz, the FI8000 laser probe interface, the FM7004A field monitor and complete monitor and probe packages.

AR SC2000 system controllers

SC2000 series RF test system controllers for automatic RF signal routing. AR also builds complete radiated, conducted and multi-tone immunity systems.

Multi-tone testing

AR multi-tone immunity systems

The AR MT2IEC10V3M and MT4IEC10V3M are single-rack radiated immunity systems that apply two or four test frequencies at once, as IEC 61000-4-3 Edition 4 permits. The manufacturer states a test time reduction of up to 50 % and up to 74 % respectively. They are delivered through ICX Lab as commissioned systems.

Frequently asked

AR in Malaysia

Who is the AR amplifier distributor in Malaysia?

ICX Lab Services in Penang is the authorised distributor of AMETEK CTS products, and AR is one of the brands under AMETEK CTS, together with EM TEST and Teseq. We quote, deliver, install and support the AR range.

What is AR equipment mainly used for?

Military and automotive RF immunity testing: MIL-STD-461 RS103 and CS114, RTCA/DO-160 Section 20, ISO 11452-2 and ISO 11452-4 for components and ISO 11451-2 for vehicles, including the radar pulse tests of vehicle manufacturer specifications. The same amplifiers are also used for IEC 61000-4-3 and IEC 61000-4-6.

Is AR the same company as Amplifier Research?

Yes. AR RF/Microwave Instrumentation is the name under which Amplifier Research of Souderton, Pennsylvania trades, and it is now part of AMETEK Compliance Test Solutions.

Which AR amplifier do I need for my chamber?

That is a system design question. Send us your test plan and we will size the amplifiers with the antenna, the couplers and the rest of the system.

Can you calibrate an AR amplifier we already own?

Yes. Amplifiers from AR and other manufacturers are covered by our RF component calibration, carried out on site, and the coupler and power sensor in the same path are calibrated at the same visit.

Are AR amplifiers export controlled?

Some are. The manufacturer states the US export classification on each spec sheet: most RF amplifiers are EAR99, and some microwave models and antennas are classified 3A001. Where a licence is required we coordinate it with the manufacturer as part of the order.

Do you also supply Teseq and EM TEST?

Yes. All three are quoted together as one system. See all Teseq models, all EM TEST models and the AMETEK CTS overview.

AR RF/Microwave Instrumentation is part of AMETEK Compliance Test Solutions. Model names, specifications and images are taken from ar.ametek-cts.com. Specifications are subject to change; refer to the manufacturer's spec sheets.
