Frankonia has designed and built anechoic chambers and shielded rooms since 1987 from Heideck, Bavaria, with its own absorber, shielding, door and automation manufacturing. ICX Lab is the authorised distributor and manages your chamber project locally, from site survey to validation.

Start with what lines the walls

Every chamber has steel, doors and a turntable. What sets a Frankonia chamber apart is the absorber: Frankosorb is made by the chamber builder itself, and three things about it change how the room is approved, kept clean and looked after for the next twenty years.

1Fire safety

Non-combustible is a different class from fire-retardant

Most chamber absorbers are carbon-loaded foam treated with a flame retardant. Frankosorb A2 is built so that it cannot burn in the first place. The difference sounds small and is not.

In plain terms

Fire-retardant (class B2, or UL 94 HBF) means the foam has been treated to burn slowly and to go out once the flame source is taken away. It still burns, it still smokes, and a hot enough source, such as a product failing under a surge test, will light it.

Non-combustible (class A2 to DIN 4102 and EN 13501-1 A2-s1,d0) means the material does not contribute to a fire. It will not sustain a flame on its own, it releases very little smoke and it does not form burning droplets. Frankosorb A2 passes all five NRL 8093 fire tests, the absorber test series used by the US Navy. Fire-retardant absorbers are typically tested to the first three.

Typical foam absorberHundreds of square metres of combustible material in a sealed steel room. Fire authorities and insurers often ask for sprinklers or gas suppression inside the chamber, plus smoke detection and annual inspection.
Frankosorb A2The lining is not fuel. A test product that catches fire burns alone and is put out with an extinguisher. The chamber can usually be approved without a suppression system of its own.
  • For the customer: a simpler fire-authority and insurance approval, and no fire system to maintain inside a room that is meant to stay sealed.
  • For the installation: no sprinkler pipes or gas lines through the shield. Every penetration is a weak point that needs a filter or a waveguide, so fewer penetrations mean better shielding and less to certify.
  • For the test: immunity tests push products to failure by design. When one fails hot, the absorber behind it does not join in.

Fire approval always rests with your local authority. We supply the A2 classification and NRL 8093 test reports with the quotation so the conversation starts from the documents.

2Clean air, clean equipment

Carbon-free means no carbon dust, ever

A conventional pyramid is polyurethane or polystyrene foam loaded with carbon to make it absorb. As the foam ages, dries and gets knocked, it sheds a fine black carbon dust. Anyone who has worked in an older chamber knows the grey film on the turntable and the black fingertips.

In plain terms

Frankosorb pyramids are a hollow shape coated with a resistive film about ten micrometres thick. The absorbing layer is on the surface, there is no carbon in the bulk, so there is nothing to shed. The surface is white, washable and does not take up moisture.

  • For your equipment under test: carbon dust is conductive. It settles on connectors, boards and the product under test, and a lab cannot tell a customer that a failure came from the room.
  • For the people in the room: the same fine particles are what an operator breathes during a long test day and every time the lining is cleaned. Less airborne dust is simply better for anyone who works in the chamber.
  • For clean industries: Frankosorb is qualified for ISO 14644-1 Class 5 clean rooms. Medical device, semiconductor and optics customers can test in the chamber without bringing it up to their standard first.
  • At the end of its life: the absorber is 99 percent recyclable, and Frankonia's installed linings have run for more than 25 years without replacement.
3Maintenance and relocation

Screwed and hung, never glued

Most hybrid absorbers are glued to their ferrite tiles or to the wall panel. It is quick on the day of installation and a problem for the following twenty years. Frankosorb pyramids are fixed with screws or hung on rails, one piece at a time.

Glued absorberA damaged pyramid is cut out, the residue scraped, new adhesive applied and left to cure in a sealed room. Moving the chamber means tearing the lining off the panels and buying it again.
Frankosorb, screwedA damaged pyramid is unscrewed and a new one fitted in minutes, with no solvent and no curing time. The lining comes off with the panels and goes back up at the new site.
  • Repairs: forklift knocks, dropped products and antenna masts happen. A single-piece swap keeps the chamber in service the same afternoon.
  • Relocation: Frankonia chambers are built from bolted modular panels with a ten-year corrosion guarantee on the steel. With screwed absorbers, the whole chamber is a relocatable asset, not a fixture written off with the building.
  • Extension: a 3 m chamber can be lengthened or converted later, and the existing absorbers are re-used rather than replaced.
  • Installation: no adhesive fumes in a closed steel room, no curing schedule on the critical path, and a lining that can be inspected piece by piece at handover.

Why this one: three test axes in one 10 m chamber. How long does a chamber project take?
