On-site EMC testing · Immunity at the customer's premises

An immunity kit that travels to the product and needs no laptop

Large machines, installed systems and production lines cannot come to a laboratory. Two systems carry the immunity tests to them. Conducted RF on site: the NSG 4070C with the KEMZ 801B clamp, which closes over any cable. Transients and ESD on site: the NSG 3040A with its built-in coupling network, and the battery-powered esd NX30.

Clamp the cable, set the level, run

The NSG 4070C carries the generator, amplifier, coupler and power meters, and the KEMZ 801B EM clamp couples the disturbance onto the cable the equipment is already using. Nothing is unplugged and no coupling network is matched to the port.

The pain point

A laboratory's conducted RF bench does not fit in a car

Conducted RF immunity at a customer site means carrying the generator chain and a coupling network for every port type, then finding a bench and a mains socket for the laptop.

Conventional: the laboratory bench, boxed up

Signal generator, external amplifier, coupler, power meter, a PC and a case of CDNs sized to each port the product has.

  • Each port needs the matching CDN, and a port the case does not cover cannot be tested that day
  • Unplugging a cable on an installed system means downtime and a re-commissioning check
  • Level setting runs through the PC, and cable and coupler losses are entered by hand
  • A driver update or a licence lapse on the laptop stops the visit

  • The clamp closes over any cable up to 20 mm, power, signal or data, so every port is tested with the same device
  • Level setting with the CAL 801A takes minutes from the front panel and is stored for the next visit
  • Amplifier, coupler and meters are matched at the factory, so no loss tables travel with the kit
  • Results go to a USB stick, and the report is written back at the office

Why we lead with the NSG 4070C for site work

No laptop on the floor

The NSG 4070C sets levels, sweeps, monitors the EUT and stores results on its own screen. Software is for the office, not the site.

One clamp for every cable

The KEMZ 801B is the EM clamp of IEC 61000-4-6 Annex A. It replaces a case of CDNs and never asks the customer to unplug anything.

Set the level where it matters

The CAL 801A adapter set puts the level-setting fixture at the clamp, so the stress level is set for that cable on that day, not from a laboratory table.

Two cases, one person

The instrument is about 15 kg and the clamp about 7 kg. One engineer carries the conducted RF test into a plant room.

The same instrument in the laboratory

Back at base, the NSG 4070C runs IEC 61000-4-6 with CDNs and automotive BCI with the CIP 9136A, so the site kit is not idle between visits.

Supported and calibrated here

ICX Lab Services trains your team and calibrates the clamp and instrument on the accredited scope, so the kit is ready for the next visit.

Surge, burst, dips and ESD from two cases

The NSG 3040A couples surge, burst and dips onto the equipment mains through its own network, and the esd NX30 runs from its battery base, so the operator can walk around the machine.

The pain point

Three generators, a coupling network and a variac, for three tests

Surge, burst and dips are three instruments in a distributed kit, plus the network that joins them to the mains and a PC to sequence them. On site, that is a trolley, not a case.

Conventional: a generator per test

Separate surge and burst generators, a dips unit with a variac, an external coupling network and a PC to run the sequence.

  • The coupling network is re-wired between surge, burst and dips
  • Thresholds are found by editing a parameter on the PC and re-running
  • Reports are assembled from three instruments' logs afterwards

  • Test reports are written on the instrument as the test proceeds

Why we lead with the NSG 3040A and esd NX30

Three tests, one box, one mains lead

Surge, burst and dips share the NSG 3040A's internal coupling network, so the equipment mains is connected once.

Find the threshold on the spot

Parameters can be changed while the test runs. A site visit ends with the level at which the product fails, not just a pass or a fail.

Battery where it counts

The esd NX30 base station carries a battery rated for 30,000 discharges at 30 kV, so the ESD test walks around the machine without a mains lead.

Checks itself on site

The esd NX30 self-calibrates at any time and detects which R/C network is fitted, so a discharge at the wrong network cannot go unnoticed.

Comfortable for a long session

The esd NX30 gun weighs 1.25 kg with its network fitted, and the colour touch display sits on the gun, so the operator reads and changes the level without turning to the base. A cradle rests it between points.

ICX Lab Services trains your team and calibrates the generator, network and ESD gun on the accredited scope, so the kit is ready for the next visit.
